Luke Bibby played in 33 games last season, but it wasn’t until Game 31 that he picked up his first collegiate point.
He didn’t wait much longer for his inevitable first career goal. Bibby, who carved out a role as a reliable bottom six forward with a willingness to go to the tough areas, fittingly scored that goal by getting to the slot and tipping a Ty Hanson shot by LIU goalie Daniel Duris with 6:03 left, a goal that broke a 4-4 tie and helped UMD to a 7-4 season-opening win.
Lots of changes for UMD heading into the rematch. As planned, freshman Carl Axelsson will make his debut in goal. On defense, Aaron Pionk takes a seat, with Carter Murphy moving up to the top pairing with Ty Hanson, and fellow freshman Keith McInnis being paired with Adam Kleber. Pionk’s absence means UMD will have to make a change on its second power play unit. Guessing Kleber and Murphy will be candidates to fill that spot, but that’s purely a guess.
At forward, Blake Bechen and Kade Kohanski are out, with Ryan Zaremba taking Kohanski’s spot, and UMD is dressing both junior Trevor Stachowiak and senior Braden Fischer, going with 13 forwards.
Lots of changes for LIU, but not in goal.
