ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota bear hunting season began on Tuesday and the Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters to avoid shooting marked research bears.
There are currently 50 radio collared black bears across the state that are also marked with large, colorful ear tags.
Most are in or near the Chippewa National Forest, Camp Ripley, Brainerd, Baxter and Duluth areas.
If you do happen to shoot a collared bear, the DNR asks you to submit the collar and a memory device and heart monitor that is implanted under the skin on the bear’s left side.
Pickup or drop off of those items can be coordinated with the DNR Wildlife Research Office in Grand Rapids at 218-328-8879.
