DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The official groundbreaking for a project that will replace the current Blatnik Bridge between Duluth and Superior was held on Monday.
State, local and federal officials gathered near the bridge to recognize the many partnerships and collaboration needed to fund and construct the billion dollar structure.
Among those attending the celebration were Governor Walz and Senators Klobuchar and Smith from Minnesota and Governor Evers and Senator Baldwin from Wisconsin.
The current bridge, built in 1961, carries over 33 thousand vehicles a day and, according to transportation officials, has reached the end of its service life.
Construction of the new bridge is already underway with prep work and the Blatnik Bridge will be closing to traffic early in 2027.
The new bridge is expected to be open in 2031.
