Sep 24 (Field Level Media) – No. 5 seed Adolfo Daniel Vallejo of Paraguay had seven aces and saved all four break points he faced while holding on for a 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-4 victory over China’s Jie Cui to win his first-round match of the Hangzhou Open on Thursday in China.
No. 8 seed Kamil Majchrzak of Poland also advanced, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Mattia Bellucci of Italy in a tidy 1 hour, 20 minutes. Winners also included No. 6 Fabian Marozsan of Hungary, 6-4, 6-2 over Alex Bolt of Australia, and No. 7 Jaime Faria of Portugal, 3-6, 7-6 (9), 6-4 over Terence Atmane of France. Faria saved two match points in the marathon second-set tiebreaker.
Other players to advance included Coleman Wong of Hong Kong, Yunchaokete Bu of China, Taro Daniel of Japan, Hugo Gaston of France, Rinky Hijikata of Australia and Roman Safiullin of Russia.
Chengdu Open
No. 5 seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland and No. 7 seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada each survived second-set tiebreakers to advance in the first round in China.
Hurkacz had 15 aces and did not face a break point in a 6-3, 7-6 (10) victory over Aleksandr Schevchenko of Kazakhstan, while Shapovalov saved three of four break points to earn a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands.
Other first-round winners included Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina, Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, Martin Damm of the United States, Lloyd Harris of South Africa, Italians Federico Cina and Lorenzo Sonego and Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino and Alexandre Muller.
