DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The St. Louis County Public Works Department has won a national award for their road condition monitoring program.
The camera and data gathering system allows road crews to monitor weather and road conditions across the county’s 3,000 miles of roads and bridges.
In a competition sponsored the U-S Federal Highway Administration, St. Louis County won the “National Build A Better Mousetrap-SMART Transformation Award.”
County staff working on the project researched cameras that would be durable and reliable in inclement winter weather and mounted them on existing poles or trees to save money.
The purchase and installation of 51 cameras cost 27,600 dollars of which 20 thousand was funded by a University of Minnesota grant.
