DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The fight against the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) will continue this year in Duluth.
The invasive beetle bores into ash trees and damages the ability of the trees to take up needed water and nutrients.
The process will kill the tree in two to seven years depending on its age and vigor.
Thanks to grants from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the city has removed and replaced about 1800 dead or dying ash trees out of the initial population of 3200.
Another 400 to 600 will be removed each year going forward with completion of removal and replanting expected by 2026.
The trees are being replaced with species that will be less vulnerable to any future invasive insects.
