ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – Most area lakes are now ice free, but the water remains very cold as anglers open the Minnesota fishing season on Saturday.
The DNR reminds those fishing or boating this weekend to be prepared before heading out on the water.
Boats should be registered with the proper safety equipment and those in the boat should wear a life jacket.
Wearing a life jacket is the most effective way to survive a fall into cold water.
Distribute weight in the boat evenly, bring a cell phone with you and let people know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
Keep an eye on the weather and avoid shifting winds and storms.
About a half million people are expected to take part in the opening fishing weekend in Minnesota.
