DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – After the COVID induced lows in 2020, the Port of Duluth Superior saw a 27 percent increase in total tonnage in 2021.
The Seaway Port Authority figures also show a 2.3 percent increase over the five season average.
Leading the way was iron ore shipments which were up 32.6 percent from the previous year and 11.9 percent higher than the five year average.
Other highlights of the season were inbound cement which doubled the 2020 numbers and general cargo up by 4.6 percent.
Vessel arrivals in the Twin Ports jumped more than 16 percent from the previous year.
On the downside, grain shipments took a big hit marking an 85 year low at 808,498 short tons, the 2nd lowest grain total for the port since 1890.
