DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin has ruled that a fatal officer-involved shooting in Mt. Iron in December was justified.
The shooting happened on December 5th in a wooded area of Mt. Iron while authorities responded to a shoplifting call. The subject was identified as a possible suspect in relation to an earlier shooting incident in Virginia.
Authorities identified the man who died during the incident as Estavon Dominick Elioff, 19, of Virginia.
The report says he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), St. Louis County Deputy Ryan Smith and Deputy Matt Tomsich fired their weapons when it was thought that the suspect was aiming a gun at them.
It was later determined that the object was a knife.
Rubin and two outside counsels, reviewed the BCA’s findings before the ruling was made.
