UNDATED (WSAU) State experts do not think a deadly virus is to blame for a fish kill on Lake DuBay. Instead they believe hundreds of fish were in poor health because of a long, stressful and cold winter.

Biologists say many fish had underdeveloped gills, and couldn't get the oxygen they needed as the water warmed up this spring. Tests for several fish viruses have come back negative.

Most of the dead fish were crappies, and the D.N.R. says there are plenty of other species for fisherman to go after on the lake. They also predict the crappie population will come back naturally over the next few years.
